ALPENA, MICHIGAN -

The small city of Alpena, Michigan is making big strides in sustainability with the recent installation of a solar panel array at the city's wastewater treatment plant. The array, which was completed last month, is capable of generating up to 250 kilowatts of electricity, enough to power 30 homes. The project was made possible with the help of a grant from the Michigan Energy Office and is expected to save the city roughly $15,000 a year in energy costs.

City officials say the solar panel array is just one of many steps Alpena is taking to become more sustainable and reduce its carbon footprint. The city has also implemented a recycling program and has invested in electric and hybrid vehicles for its municipal fleet. These efforts have earned Alpena a "Green Community" designation from the Michigan Department of Energy, Great Lakes, and Environment.

Mayor Matt Waligora says the city's commitment to sustainability is not only good for the environment, but also for the local economy. "By investing in renewable energy and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, we're not only helping to protect our planet, but we're also creating new jobs and opportunities for our community," he said.

The solar panel array at the wastewater treatment plant is just the beginning of Alpena's plans for renewable energy. The city is currently exploring the possibility of adding more solar panels to other city-owned properties, including the local airport and water treatment plant. With its dedication to sustainability, Alpena is quickly becoming a leader in green initiatives in the state of Michigan.
